MHC-American University Affiliation Offers More Academic Choices

Mount Holyoke students can now spend a semester at American University on one of ten special Washington Semester programs. Some, like the Peace and Conflict Resolution Program, mirror opportunities already available in the Five College area. But at least one, the International Environment and Development program, offers an opportunity unique in American higher education (it combines twelve weeks in Washington with three weeks of field work in Kenya or Costa Rica).

The programs now open to MHC students at American University are: American politics: national government; American politics: public law; and economic policy, international business and trade, international environment and development, journalism, justice, museum studies and the arts, peace and conflict resolution, and foreign policy.

The programs combine classroom seminars with internships, practicums, and/or research projects, and take full advantage of the myriad opportunities available in Washington. Students in the economic policy program, for example, might meet with congresspeople, reporters, Washington think tank representatives, and other major decision makers. Those studying international business and trade might do internships at government departments as well as major companies in the private sector.
