Writing Prizes Awarded by English Department

The following prizes are awarded each year by the English department. For details on submitting entries and to pick up an application form, stop by the English department office, 201 Clapp Laboratory. The deadline for all entries is 4 pm Monday, April 28.

Virginia Lee Barnes Prize for the best critical essay by a senior in English, American studies, medieval studies, or women's studies

Barbara Benson Prize Fiction, essay, or any prose form

Gertrude Claytor: Academy of American Poets Poetry. A poem or group of poems of no more than four pages

Minnie Ryan Dwight Prize Excellence in journalistic writing

Helen Kemp Foster Award Creative writing, poetry, or prose

MacArthur-Leithauser Travel Award Creative writing

Kathryn G. McFarland Award Poetry, story, play, or any other form of creative writing

Sydney Robertson McLean Prize Short story

Anne Singer Award Poetry, story, play, or any other form of creative writing

Ada L. F. Snell Prize Poetry. A poem or group of poems of not more than fifty lines.
