More than 700 young athletes participated in two U.S. Gymnastic Training Centers camps, held on campus earlier this month. Many of the staff, including Russian Olympian Svetlana Bogvinskaia (center), have international reputations.
Smoke poured out of South Rockefeller Hall August 13, but it was part of a safety drill, not an actual emergency. The South Hadley Fire Department provided the smoke machine, and their workers joined emergency personnel from MHC's public safety office and the South Hadley Police Department to practice coordinated response to a full-scale disaster. Ten MHC evening custodians played the roles of "victims" who were "trapped" on the lower floors of Rocky; some were carried out on stretchers and whisked by ambulance for "medical attention" during the hour-long practice. Public safety director Paul Ominsky said videotapes of the drill will be reviewed to determine how well emergency personnel responded and to improve the College's emergency response system.
