For the first time, Mountain Day will be noted as such on the College's weather line. For students attending MHC classes from another Five College campus, the recording will be posted that morning as a way of letting them know that classes have been canceled. Faculty who have Five College students should alert commuting students to check 538-2330 any fine morning after 6 am for the announcement. These students may want to know more about this great Mount Holyoke fall tradition.
Mount Holyoke has been invited to nominate candidates for the Luce Scholars Program, for one-year professional internships in Asia in 1998-99. The program is open to U.S. citizens who are no older than twenty-nine as of September 1, 1998, and who have a strong and clearly defined career interest in a field other than Asian Studies (a brief visit to Asia, or one or two courses, will not disqualify an individual). Nominees need not propose a specific project, nor have any background in an Asian language, but should have some idea of how they would benefit professionally from a year working in Asia. Placements are possible in nearly any discipline; the program operates through most of East and Southeast Asia. Mount Holyoke may nominate current seniors, alumnae, and faculty. Further information and sample application forms are available in the Study Abroad Library (third floor, Mary Lyon Hall) and the Career Development Center (CDC). Completed applications are due October 27. See Joanne Picard in international affairs, x2072, for details.
The Counseling Center will be sponsoring three free, confidential groups during the fall semester. The eight-week Stress and Anxiety Workshop is designed to show effective ways to manage stress and anxiety. This workshop will take place Mondays from 3:00 to 4:15 pm starting October 6 with Cheryll Rothery, PsyD. The Relationship Issues Group is for women dealing with problems in family and interpersonal relationships and with issues of self-esteem and depression. This group will meet Fridays from 1:00 to 2:30 pm starting October 17 with Kathy Pfister, MSW. The Eating Issues Group is for women struggling with eating problems and/or body-image issues. This group will meet Thursdays at 4:15 pm starting October 2 with Davina Miller, MSW. If you are interested in one of these groups, call x2037 as soon as possible for a screening appointment. The groups will begin when there are six participants. Other groups are available at the other four colleges. If you are interested in a specific group that is not mentioned here, call the Counseling Service at x2037 for information.
Free, anonymous HIV testing and counseling is available to all Mount Holyoke students. There will be no documentation of this testing in your medical record and your name will not be associated with your test results. However, the HIV testing staff are Mount Holyoke Health Center employees, whom you may know from previous Health Center visits and whom you may see again. For further information or to schedule an appointment, call x2121 and choose option number three on the voice-mail answering system. No names are required.
The January internship notebooks are now available in the CDC library. Check out the great opportunities we have waiting for you! Information on internships at such organizations as Goldman Sachs, NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund, Glamour magazine, Womanshelter/ Compañeras is now available in the CDC library. Brief descriptions are available at our Web site, but for the most comprehensive information, students should consult the notebooks. Reminder: All January internships materials are due during deadline week, October 21-27. If you are thinking of designing your own internship and aren't sure where to begin, come to one of the "Need Help Developing Your Own January Internship?" workshops being offered. This program is not mandatory--it is intended to help you discover your network and utilize the resources available to create opportunities for an exciting January internship.
