Panel to Discuss Multiple Meanings of Princess Diana
The extraordinary life and death of Diana, Princess of Wales, continues to evoke comment and analysis globally, and a multidisciplinary group of local women's studies scholars will gather November 13 (see calendar for details) to consider her life and legacy. Five College Women's Studies Research Center director Gail Hornstein says the idea for "Reading Diana," which came from professor of Spanish Alberto Sandoval, was enthusiastically embraced by the center's steering committee. "They recognized this as a serious topic and decided that we should deal in a scholarly way with various aspects of Diana's life and death and the myriad reactions to her funeral," Hornstein said.
The cultural meanings of Diana's life and death will be addressed from a wide variety of perspectives, touching on colonialism, race, eating disorders, political theory, and feminist analysis, says Hornstein, who will serve as moderator for the event.
