Winter Convocation Adopts Student Leadership Theme; Judge Janet Hall '70 to Deliver Keynote

From student leader to the federal bench--Janet Hall '70, federal judge, president of the MHC Alumnae Association, and an MHC trustee, will speak at the January 28 convocation.

For what lofty heights can a student leadership position prepare you? Just ask federal judge Janet C. Hall, who was president of the Student Government Association before graduating from MHC in 1970. Now an attorney, judge, chair of the Federal Bar Council, MHC trustee, and president of the Alumnae Association, Hall is returning to her alma mater to speak at winter convocation. The college community will gather January 28 at 8 pm in Abbey Chapel to hear her give "Confessions of a Student Activist."

During convocation, president Joanne Creighton and assistant dean of students Lisa Werkmeister Rozas will recognize current students whose leadership and service have enriched the life of the College and the wider community. Creighton will also address the College community to welcome everyone back for second semester.

The main convocation speaker, distinguished trial attorney Janet Hall, was sworn in as a U.S. district judge in New Haven, Connecticut, last year. She had been a partner at Robinson and Cole in Hartford since 1982. Earlier in her career, Hall served as a trial attorney and as a special assistant U.S. attorney for the Department of Justice. She received her JD in 1973 from New York University and began her law career at Hale & Dorr in Boston.

Hall was Mount Holyoke's first "young alumna trustee," encouraged the board of trustees to address issues of social responsibility concerning the College's investments, and has served on major committees for both the College and the Alumnae Association. She received the College's Alumnae Medal of Honor in 1980. She is also a mother of three who has served as a coach for Hamden, Connecticut, children's basketball teams.
