Employee Personal Leave
Policy Being Reviewed

Last spring, personal leave became part of sick leave for all employees. The intention was to provide flexibility and equity for all employees (formerly, only nonexempt employees received personal leave).

Human Resources Director Lauren Turner says she is reviewing the policy to see how well it's working. In addition to meeting with various campus groups, Turner is gathering information from individual employees about their experiences under the new policy this year.

Has personal leave been helpful to you? If so, for what purpose did you use it (to care for a sick child, make arrangements following a car accident, etc.)? Do you have any concerns about how the policy is being administered in your department? Is it a good or bad policy? Let Turner know your thoughts on the policy (summarized below) at x2503 or lturner@mtholyoke.edu.

The current policy, which is under review, allows employees to accrue fifteen days of sick leave annually, up to six of which may be used for what was previously called personal leave (time used to care for sick family members, or attend to personal business or emergencies). If personal days aren't used, they accumulate from year to year as part of an individual's sick leave "bank" of up to 130 days.
