Giving gun violence the boot

At a May 2 demonstration in Springfield, MHC participants stand in front of a tiny fraction of the shoes representing the number of people killed by handguns in a typical year. The protest gained national media coverage, including spots on the national CBS and NBC newscasts, National Public Radio, and Fox TV. Professor Chris Pyle organized the MHC contingent.

The main entryway of Clapp Laboratory now sports this handsome metal sculpture created by Connecticut artist Peter Busby to honor retired professor Jane Townsend. The life cycle of a frog was chosen as the theme because Townsend conducted research, using histochemical techniques, on the distribution of glycoproteins in the skin of aquatic and terrestrial frogs.
