Panel to Air Three Viewpoints on Affirmative Action

As part of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion's yearlong series on affirmative action, a November 19 panel discussion featuring diverse perspectives on this hotly contested issue will include nationally renowned author Abigail Thernstrom, Trinity College administrator Sharon Herzberger, and Harvard professor emeritus Nathan Glazer.

Each of the three panel members represents a different viewpoint on the issue.

Opposing affirmative action will be Abigail Thernstrom, coauthor of "America in Black and White: One Nation, Indivisible", which was named by the New York Times Book Review as one of 1997's notable books. Thernstrom, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute in New York and a member of the Massachusetts State Board of Education, was one of three authors to appear at President Clinton's first town meeting on race last December.

Sharon Herzberger, vice president of student services at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, will support affirmative action. A professor of psychology, Herzberger has coauthored a book on affirmative action. At Trinity, she oversees the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Nathan Glazer, one of the earliest critics of affirmative action, recently modified his views on the issue. Representing a middle position, Glazer, a Harvard professor emeritus, is the author of "We Are All Multiculturalists Now." While he supports affirmative action by institutions of higher education, he remains critical of government-imposed quotas.
