Fidelity Investment Appointments A Fidelity Investment representative will be on campus Monday, November 16 to meet with individuals on a one-on-one basis to discuss funds, allocations, retirement planning, or any questions you have. Meetings will be held in Blanchard Campus Center, Room 202. Please call Fidelity directly to schedule an appointment at: (800) 642-7131. Meetings will run 9 am-4 pm.
Course Drop Deadline Friday, November 20, is the last day for all students to drop a course. Drop forms, which are available in the registrar's office, must be returned with all appropriate signatures by the drop deadline.
Ungraded Option Deadline for the Class of 2002 Friday, November 20, is the last day for students in the Class of 2002 to elect or change an ungraded option. Forms are available in the registrar's office and must be filed by the deadline.
Leave of Absence Deadline for Spring 1999 Monday, November 16, is the last day to apply for an academic leave of absence for spring 1999. For study abroad, including Canada, please use the study abroad application available in the study abroad library, 3rd floor Mary Lyon Hall. For study in the United States, please use the academic leave of absence application available in the registrar's office, 6 Mary Lyon Hall.
Official Closing for November Break All residence halls will remain open during November break (November 25-29). If you are leaving for the break, please adhere to the following:
1. Obtain the trunk room key from the head resident(s) for needed belongings. Trunk room keys are only available through head residents. (Residents of North/South Mandelle, Porter, Safford, and North/South Rocky, please contact your hall president for the trunk room key.) Please plan ahead.
2. Close windows and storm windows securely.
3. Lock rooms and closets.
4. Disconnect all appliances.
5. Turn on all radiators.
6. Empty wastebaskets into central trash containers.
7. Recycle materials into the central location.
8. Return dishes to the dining room.
9. Place bicycles indoors and in the proper storage areas.
Assistantships in a French Secondary School for 1999-2000 The French government is offering to one graduating Mount Holyoke senior an assistantship in a French secondary school. The assistantship requires twelve hours of teaching weekly--in most cases, group conversation on American literature and civilization. The salary for 1999-2000 is approximately 5,304 francs per month for eight months, plus free tuition at the nearest university. A very good knowledge of French is required. Applicants should be French majors, French minors, or romance languages and literatures majors with French as the primary language. Interested students should contact Mr. Gadjigo in the French department. Deadline for the return of applications to the French department is November 30.
St. Andrews Award The St. Andrew's Society of the State of New York offers a fellowship providing $10,000 for graduate study in Scotland. Applications for this award must be made through the fellowship coordinator. Mount Holyoke College's president must endorse the one most qualified candidate.
The deadline to notify the fellowship coordinator of intention to apply has been extended to Wednesday, November 18. Information/applications are in the fellowship files in the Career Development Center Library. Applicants must be seniors with some Scottish descent, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates who have not previously studied in the U.K. and who live within 250 miles of New York City are preferred. Students must submit a financial aid form, showing current evidence of need (either grants or loans). Candidates should possess qualifications which will enable them to be good ambassadors for the U.S. while in Scotland. Selection is based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, financial need, statement of personal objectives, and some Scottish descent. Mount Holyoke students have been winners and finalists for this award.
Beinecke Memorial Scholarship Program Mount Holyoke may nominate one junior (Class of 2000) U.S. citizen or national, pursuing any field of study, but not professional degrees (MD, JD, MBA, MFA, M.Arch.) Internal deadline for preliminary application is Friday, December 4.
Beinecke Scholarships are for $2,000 immediately after graduation and $15,000 for each of two years of graduate study. For application materials and further information, see the fellowship file, Career Development Center Library. The fellowship coordinator can show interested students past winners, sample essays, and statistics on the award.
Financial Aid for Study Away Mount Holyoke offers a limited amount of financial aid for study away in the form of Laurel Fellowships for Off-Campus Study. Students who are applying for study abroad, the Twelve College Exchange, the American University Washington Semester Program, the Marine Biological Laboratory Semester in Environmental Science, or the Columbia Biosphere Program are eligible to apply for these awards. Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis, with priority given to eligible students who can clearly demonstrate that study abroad or in one of the designated domestic programs is an integral part of their academic program at Mount Holyoke. Students must qualify for financial aid on the basis of the cost of the program to be eligible. All aid is for semester or academic year study, except for the Ruth Sedgwick Scholarship, which may be used for summer study or an internship in Spain or Spanish America. Application forms for the Laurel Fellowships are available from the study abroad library on the third floor of Mary Lyon. Completed applications for all or part of the 1999-2000 academic year (including spring 2000) are due December 4, 1998, for study abroad, American University, MBL, and Biosphere; applications for the Twelve College Exchange are due December 15, 1998.
NSEP Scholarships for Study Abroad National Security Education Program (NSEP) Scholarships are offered for semester, academic year, and, in some cases, summer study abroad in geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Eligible countries are located primarily in Africa, Asia, Central/Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East; not included are western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and complete their study abroad prior to graduation (first-years, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply). Awards cover up to $8,000 per semester. Recipients must agree to work in a federal agency or office with national security responsibilities for a period of time equal to the period for which they receive funding. Application forms and further information are available from the study abroad library on the third floor of Mary Lyon; preliminary applications for summer 1999 or all or part of the 1999-2000 academic year are due in the Office of International Affairs December 4, 1998.
