Most of their work happens behind the scenes, but members of the Committee on the Multiracial Community want you to know they're here and ready to deal with any issues raised by the campus community.
The committee sent a survey to faculty and staff earlier this week as part of its continuing mission to keep a finger on the community pulse about where the community is on issues of diversity and inclusion. To celebrate its thirty-year anniversary, and to encourage people to fill out and return the survey, the committee is sponsoring a raffle. Each returned survey equals a chance to win brunch for two at Willits-Hallowell.
The survey asks faculty and staff about their experience of being a part of the multiracial community at Mount Holyoke. Results will be used by committee members as an assessment tool and to help develop future goals and objectives.
The Committee on the Multiracial Community aims to achieve true community. "A true community is diverse and actively affirms all its members, sustains dialogue and understanding across differences, dismantles racism, and takes individual and collective responsibility for social justice," according to a vision statement the committee created earlier this year.
The inclusiveness program is perhaps the most visible product of the committee's work, but it also was active in considering guidelines for holiday celebrations, and held a spring forum, "Building a Diverse and Inclusive Community: Going Forward from Here," to gather community members' ideas on how to create an anti-bias community. Among the committee's plans for this year are continuing to build connections with key College departments, having a presence at campus events, and offering a faculty discussion series.
