STUDENTS

Students with Federal Direct Stafford Loans Due to recent Congressional action, you may have the opportunity to consolidate your Direct Stafford Loans at a lower interest rate. This opportunity is time-sensitive, as the application for consolidation must be filed by January 31, 1999. The student loan department urges all students to research this opportunity. Information is available on the Web at http://www.ed.gov/DirectLoan/. The application can also be downloaded from this site. All questions about this opportunity should be directed to the U.S. Department of Education at (800) 557-7392.

Diploma Information Diploma information sheets were placed in student post office boxes for members of the class of 1999. Any student intending to graduate on May 23, 1999, who did not receive diploma information, should come to the Office of the Registrar. Any student in the class of 1999 who does not intend to graduate in May should see Marilyn Pryor, interim registrar.

Seniors Finishing Requirements in December/January Any member of the class of 1999 who plans to finish all her degree requirements in December/January (and who will not be enrolled spring 1999), and has not met with Marilyn Pryor, interim registrar, to review her academic record, must make an appointment as soon as possible for an exit interview. This will enable the registrar to do one final check of the academic record with the student.

Mount Holyoke Alumnae Fellowships for Seniors Graduating seniors are eligible to apply for the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Fellowships. These fellowships are awarded for independent projects, graduate work, and professional school. Approximately twenty awards are given each year, with amounts ranging between $1,000 and $3,000. One award of $7,500 is given to the overall best candidate. Applications are available in Room 101 Mary Woolley Hall or by contacting Karen Griffin at x2653 or kgriffin@mtholyoke.edu. The application deadline is February 15.

Teaching during January Term Have you always wanted to teach? Do you enjoy helping other people learn new things? Are you an international student who wants to gain an insider's view of American public schools? Are you planning a career in early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary education? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Education 332j or 324j--Observing and Assisting in Schools--may be the January term course for you. Students interested in working in schools with early childhood (grades preK-3) or elementary (grades 1-6) or with middle (5-9) or secondary (9-12) children during January term should attend the information session Thursday, December 3, at 4 pm in room 316 Reese Psychology and Education Building. Packets for both courses will be available for pickup by Friday, November 20, in room 303 Reese. This course is required for students seeking teacher certification.

Applications Invited for Asian Art Award The Department of Art invites applications for the Richard Hsiao Asian Art Award, presented to a MHC junior or senior, in memory of Richard Hsiao, lecturer in Asian Art 1971-77. The award provides a qualifying student with $2,000 to travel to Asia to study any aspect of Asian art. Applications relating to both studio art and art history will be considered. Proposals for study may range from visits to art museums or enrollment in an art program to an independent project relating to studio art or art history. Applicants must show a strong interest in Asian art, and an ability to conduct the desired study in Asia. Applicants must have taken sufficient courses in art history, studio, and/or Asian studies, and must have a minimum grade point average of 2.7. In some cases knowledge of the local language may be required. Students must indicate how their study in Asia will contribute to their academic program at MHC. International students returning to their home region for study may not be funded. Selection for the award will be made by members of the art department in consultation with the Asian studies program as needed.

Please contact the art department office, 201A Art Building, for details and application materials. To explore possibilities for study in Asian countries, consult faculty in various departments knowledgeable about that geographical area, particularly those in the Department of Art and the Asian Studies Program. For information on academic programs in Asia, consult the office of international affairs on the third floor of Mary Lyon Hall, which maintains a library on international programs. Completed applications for summer 1999 or the academic year 1999-2000 must be submitted to the art department office no later than February 26, 1999.
