COMMUNITY

Special Collections Exhibits Erotica

The newest exhibit in Special Collections is the most exciting in a decade or more. Running through the end of April, selected works of erotica from the collection can be seen in the gallery on level 7 of the Miles-Smith Library. The accompanying labels were prepared by a diverse group from the MHC community: Nancy Birkrem and Sharon Domier, LITS; Rima S. Meadow '00; and Eugene Hill, English department. The texts represent 2,500 years of writing and nearly 250 years of illustration. A fuller version of the label texts, with links to auxiliary material, is available on the Web at: http://www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/library/arch/exhibits/erotica.html or through the library's home page under "About the Library."

Volunteers Wanted for Survey about Science

Molly Harding '99 will be videotaping a campuswide survey this month and wants to encourage all members of the MHC community to participate. She will be filming at Blanchard and around campus, and will be asking questions about experiences of fascination in science. People with various backgrounds, including those without concentrations in science, are especially welcome. Those who do volunteer to be surveyed will have their names entered in a drawing for a pass to Tower Theatres and will have Molly's undying appreciation.

The Department of Art invites applications for the Richard Hsiao Asian Art award, presented to a Mount Holyoke junior or senior, in memory of Richard Hsiao, lecturer in Asian art at Mount Holyoke (1971 - 1977). The award provides a qualifying student with up to $2,000 to travel to Asia to study any aspect of Asian art. Applications relating to both studio art and art history will be considered. Applicants must show a strong interest in Asian art, and an ability to conduct the desired study in Asia. They must have taken sufficient courses in art history, studio, and/or Asian studies, and must have a minimum grade point average of 2.7. In some cases knowledge of local language may be required. Students must indicate how their study in Asia will contribute to their academic program at Mount Holyoke. International students returning to their home region for study may not be funded. Please contact the art department office, 201A Art Building, for further details and application materials. To explore possibilities for study in Asian countries, consult faculty in various departments knowledgeable about that geographical area, particularly those in the Department of Art and the Asian studies program. For information on academic programs in Asia, consult the Office of International Affairs, located on the third floor of Mary Lyon Hall, which maintains a library on international programs. Completed applications for summer 1999 or the academic year 1999 - 2000 must be submitted to the art department office no later than February 26, 1999.
