Clinical psychologist Catherine Steiner-Adair will deliver a lecture on "The Body Politic:Women, Eating Disorders and Culture" on April. The event was originally planned as part of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week in February but was cancelled due to bad weather.
In her presentation, Steiner-Adair will discuss the connection between women's feelings about their bodies--often negative--and the body politic--those who benefit from women hating their bodies. She will focus on the political and sociocultural understanding of why eating disorders have occurred in our culture, reformulating eating disorders as a social justice issue connected to issues of diversity.
Steiner-Adair, a clinical and consulting psychologist, is the director of education, prevention, and outreach at the Harvard Eating Disorders Center. She did her doctoral work at Harvard University with Carol Gilligan and has been featured in the PBS documentary Inside Hunger and in the film The Famine Within.
