Words of wisdom reprinted Among the media apparently impressed by MHC commencement speaker Anna Quindlen's words was USA Today. That paper excerpted Quindlen's speech in the "Today's Opinion Line" section on June 18, along with addresses by Hillary Clinton, Norman Schwarzkopf, Bill Cosby, George Bush, and others.
Don't touch that dial Astute TV watchers recently caught segments about MHC-related topics and people on the following stations. On June 24, Springfield's NBC local news program Everywoman featured "Rowing Strong, Rowing Together," the program that unites MHC with Holyoke's Care Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to teen moms and their education. The program followed the teens as they tapped into the power of women's rowing. And on June 26, the local PBS affiliate (WGBY Channel 57) aired a telecast of a Boston Pops Orchestra concert that featured Mara Bonde, a 1991 MHC alumna and daughter of Allen Bonde, professor of music. The show was rebroadcast on June 28 by another PBS station, WEDH.
More on racial identity development The latest article on racial and ethnic identity development by Beverly Daniel Tatum, dean of the College and professor of psychology and education, was published in the May issue of The School Administrator. Because Tatum's article "Color Blind or Color Conscious?" dealt with what the editor called "a subject of critical importance," the issue was mailed not only to members of the American Association of School Administrators, but also to 6,000 superintendents across the country. In addition, an interview with Tatum ran in Techniques magazine earlier this year, and her article "What Do You Do When They Call You a Racist?"--originally published in the National Association of Secondary School Principals Bulletin--was recently published in condensed form in Education Digest.
