CSJ editorship changing hands Emily Harrison Weir, who has served as CSJ editor since January 1996 and expanded the paper's news coverage several-fold, is leaving the communications office this week to become associate editor of the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Quarterly. A search for her replacement is under way. Material for College Street Journal should be directed to writer/editor Janet Tobin, who has been writing for the CSJ for the last two years. Rising junior studies parental involvement in Latinos' academic achievement Angelica Acevedo '01 is one of fifteen students participating in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program at the University of Rochester this summer. Participants do research in their chosen scientific field--in Acevedo's case, psychology--and attend a "Culture of the Academy" course that discusses graduate study. At the end of the two-month program, students present their research results at a conference held at the university. Acevedo's research topic is "Parental Involvement in Latino Students' Academic Achievement." She is an active member of La Unidad, and says she plans to pursue a master's degree in social work after graduating from MHC.
In Memoriam Robert E. Moynihan, former MHC human resources director, died June 27 at the age of sixty-nine. Moynihan lived in Holyoke most of his life, graduated from American International College, served in the Air Force during the Korean War, and was city editor of the former Holyoke Transcript-Telegram. He was later the human resources director at Mount Holyoke for twenty-one years, leaving the College in 1990. He leaves his wife, Janet, a son, two daughters, and five grandchildren. Moynihan was a communicant of Holy Cross Church, and memorial contributions can be made to the Holy Cross Renovation Fund, 23 Sycamore St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
