Exhibition The Moon and The Stars: Afterlife of a Roman Empress. A portrait head of Faustina the Elder, wife of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius, is the focus of this exhibition. Faustina's death in 141 C.E. stimulated an unprecedented proliferation of coin issues, architectural dedications, and portraits. The show explores these commemorations and the theme of Aeternitas that was associated with Faustina, examining her image and those of other powerful women from antiquity to the present day. Auditions/Information Session The Five College Early Music Program announces "painless auditions" and information sessions for the Early Music Collegium, Euridice Ensemble (a baroque/classical chamber orchestra), and other ensembles. Players of wind instruments and violinists are especially welcome, but there are openings for singers and instrumentalists of all sorts. There are small instrumental ensembles, a women's vocal ensemble (Voces Feminae), and a Renaissance dance class. Exhibition Fifty-Three Views of the Floating World: Japanese Woodblock Prints Featuring Japanese prints from the museum's collection, the exhibition represents the three major phases of ukiyo-e printmaking: the early period, from the mid-seventeenth through mid-eighteenth centuries; the classic period, in the late-eighteenth century; and the nineteenth century, when some of the most elaborate and decorative prints were produced. The term ukiyo-e, literally meaning "images of the floating world," refers to views of the world of the theater and the brothel, especially the courtesans of the Yoshiwara district of Edo (now Tokyo).
