October 25 Celebration of MHC with Wendy Wasserstein and Congresswoman Nita Lowey Set for Lincoln Center

Headlining a gala New York celebration of Mount Holyoke at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center October 25 will be two of the College's best-known graduates--Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein '71 and U.S. Congresswoman Nita Melnikoff Lowey '59 (D-Harrison).

The New York Celebration of Mount Holyoke will honor the College's accomplished New York alumnae, and most of the expected 700 guests will be from the New York metropolitan area. The greater New York area is home to twelve alumnae clubs and nearly 6,000 Mount Holyoke College alumnae, making it the largest population of Mount Holyoke alumnae in the world.

The event will start at 5:30 pm with a reception. Harriet Levine Weissman '58, trustee and cochair of the Campaign for Mount Holyoke, and Wendy J. Wasserstein, an honorary campaign cochair, will open the program. Later in the evening, Congresswoman Lowey will introduce President Joanne V. Creighton, who will give a College address. Rounding out the program will be music by the College's glee club and by soprano Mara Bonde '91 with closing remarks by Wasserstein.

Chairing the celebration are Harriet Levine Weissman '58 and Virginia Altman Aaron '66. The event was also supported by the Celebration Committee, numbering some 150 Mount Holyoke College alumnae residing in the New York area.

This month The Campaign for Mount Holyoke College, the College's comprehensive campaign, marks its first anniversary. To date, $16.3 million has been given by 57 percent of the New York area's alumnae to the College's current comprehensive fundraising campaign. Of the campaign's $200 million goal, $105 million in gifts and pledges has been raised overall. In addition, more than half of the College's targeted goal has been raised for endowment, a priority of the current campaign.
