It's Better to Give and Receive

During this holiday season, the College has given its staff a gift of two bonus vacation end-of-millennium days, December 29 and 30. President Creighton is urging the staff to be equally generous in supporting the efforts of the United Way to improve the lives of the less fortunate members of the community during the next millennium.

Subject: The End is Coming

Not only are we reaching the end of the semester (and of my fourth year on the job, I might note), so, too, is the end of the millennium almost upon us. I can't let this historic moment pass without notice, without thanks, and without celebration.

One of the great pleasures of serving as president is the bird's-eye view afforded by the position. From that vista, one can see with special acuity how valuable this venerable College is, how deeply it inspires the allegiance of all who are associated with it, and how powerfully it binds us together into community and common purpose.

I am proud of our collective stewardship of this College, of the palpable momentum we've engendered under The Plan for Mount Holyoke 2003, now in its third year of implementation. We are meeting or exceeding the ambitious goals we set for ourselves--in fact, all leading indicators are positive. We wouldn't be experiencing this unmistakable resurgence of institutional strength and vigor without the commitment, dedication, and hard work of all of you.

As a special once-in-a-millennium thank you gift to all Mount Holyoke staff for your extraordinary work on behalf of College, I'm pleased to announce two bonus vacation end-of-millennium days, December 29 and 30. As a consequence, the College will be closed from December 24 to January 3.

I wish you all a joyful and restful holiday season and a happy new millennium!

Subject: United Way Campaign

I would like to thank all who gave generously to the United Way Community Campaign.

The good news is that employee participation in this campaign increased dramatically from 104 contributors last year to 170 this year. I can't help noting, however, that this is a modest percentage of our approximately 1,000 employees. And the bad news is that we failed to meet our goal of $30,000, or even to match last year's total contribution of $27,406. Gifts to date are $26,386.

I know we can do better. I know that the spirit of giving back to the community is deep in the bones of this institution, just as it is a resonant part of our educational mission. I suspect that many of you just didn't get around to making your contribution.

I write to ask if you would do so now: I've extended the closing date of this campaign to December 24.

We are one of the largest employers in South Hadley. Our resurgence of institutional strength helps to ensure that our employees enjoy good pay, benefits, and security. Not everyone shares in this good fortune. Now more than ever, the less fortunate in our community need us.

If you have not already done so, please join with us in this worthy cause! If you need a new pledge form, please call my office at x2500.
