"I was raised in this house by some of the wisest women to see the light of day...These old snuff dippers taught me some things about living and loving and being a woman." --Daughter

The Mount Holyoke Department of Theatre Arts and the University of Massachusetts New World Theater will present Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery by Shay Youngblood December 2 - 4 in the Rooke Theatre. The performances are at 8 pm nightly with an additional 2 pm matinee on Saturday, December 4. Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery is the first coproduction of MHC and the New World Theatre.

The play is being directed by Celia Hilson, currently artist-in-residence at the Magnet Middle School in Holyoke. Actresses are from four of the five and campuses and include MHC students Delores Brown '00, Carrie Bullock '01, Aja Crockett '03, and Hazel Meda '03.

Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery, a 1991 NAACP Theater Award nominee set during the 1950s and 60s in the southern United States, is the story of a community of women. Taking its name from a faith-healing ceremony, the play follows Daughter's preparation for the ritual of womanhood. Abandoned by her birth mother and raised by a sisterhood of older black women she calls her "mamas," Daughter prepares to "go to the river." In a small southern town, a place where dreams and memories collide, Daughter recalls the stories which have helped to forge her identity.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and low-income patrons. For tickets, call the Mount Holyoke College box office at x2406.
