American Ballet Theatre to Dance at MHC

American Ballet Theatre PosterThe American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company returns for its third performance at Mount Holyoke October 14 and 15. The nationally acclaimed second company of ABT will present a program of modern works and timeless classics in the ballet idiom, Friday October 14, at 8 pm and Saturday, October 15, at 3 pm and 8 pm, in the Studio Theatre at Kendall Sports and Dance Complex.

ABT Studio Company, now entering its eleventh season, is a small classical company of 12 young dancers of outstanding talent. The dancers, ages 16–20, are handpicked from around the world by the artistic staff of American Ballet Theatre. Studio Company dancers train in the program for one or two years before joining American Ballet Theatre’s main company or other leading national and international professional companies. In addition to performing classic repertory pieces, work created specifically for the company provides opportunities for the emergence of new and established choreographers and composers.

Highlights from the program this year will include excerpts from Divertimento No. 15, choreographed by George Balanchine and staged by Merrill Ashley. New to the Studio Company this season, Divertimento No. 15 is a Balanchine “tutu” ballet that puts a modern spin on Russian Classicism. Hush is a sensational work that premiered last December, choreographed by Ballet Austin artistic director Stephen Mills. A contemporary ballet set to music by partners who inspire images of couples in love.

The New York Times has said of the company: “Youth, good taste, and exquisite training were the hallmarks of the program presented by American Ballet Theatre’s Studio….” Reservations are strongly recommended and may be made by calling 413-538-2848 or emailing dance-reservations@mtholyoke.edu beginning October 3. Ticket are $15 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors.

Mount Holyoke gratefully acknowledges the Rosh Foundation Artistic Initiatives Fund and Robin Chemers Neustein '75 for supporting the ABT Studio Company performance at Mount Holyoke.
