CGI Wins Grant to Support Upcoming Conference
The Center for Global
Initiatives recently was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Rockefeller
Brothers Fund to support its March
3–4 conference, New Global Realities:Winners and Losers
from Offshore Outsourcing. The conference is cosponsored by the
Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the New York
Times
Knowledge Network.
The grant money will be used to cover costs of
the conference and also to distribute results of the two-day
event. The center plans
to record and publish the proceedings from the conference in a
variety of electronic and print formats and distribute the findings
and materials to educational institutions and nongovernmental organizations
around the world, particularly in regions of the global South that
have been most dramatically affected by outsourcing and its social
and economic consequences.
"Given
the importance and timeliness of the topic and the comprehensive
approach we are taking, we anticipate that there
will be broad
interest in the proceedings of this conference," said economics
professor Eva Paus, director of the center, who hopes to produce
a high-quality DVD of the conference to be distributed with a full
print volume of the conference to educators and NGOs.
The conference
will make a distinctive and much-needed contribution to the debates
over offshore outsourcing and its consequences,
because it will address the implications of these developments
in both the global North and South. Typically, the focus of discussion
has been on outsourcing's impact on developed countries, with
the implicit assumption that developing countries in the global
South
are, overall, the beneficiaries of these practices.
The Rockefeller
Brothers Fund is a philanthropic organization that promotes social
change that contributes to a more just,
sustainable,
and peaceful world. Through its grant making, the fund supports
efforts to expand knowledge, clarify values and critical choices,
nurture creative expression, and shape public policy.
