The
Colored Museum to Run March 3-4
As a part of
a series of events to commemorate Black History Month, Laurie
Adamson
'09, Andrea Brown '06, Rachel Chen '09, Eve Crusto
'08, and Chenai Gondo '07 will perform in the ensemble cast of
George C. Wolfe’s award-winning play, The Colored Museum.
The performance will be held at Rooke Theatre March 3–4 at
8 pm.
Directing the production are Rochelle Calhoun '83, the executive
director of Alumnae Association, and Aida Mbowa '07, an identity
and performance studies major.
The Colored Museum is
a highly provocative, sharply satirical, uncompromisingly witty
look at what it means
to be black in America
today. With eleven "exhibits"—scenes—it brings
to surface the historical and current mis/representation of African
Americans in the media, on stage, and in the American imagination.
The characters
take us on journeys to places such as "The
Bottomless Pit," the spicy snap queen Miss Roj’s favorite
watering hole. With the bubbly flight attendant, Miss Pat, we also
cross the Atlantic on the Celebrity Slaveship, while going through
a time warp where the "passengers" get a sneak peak at
the next 200 years of African American history. The performance
is complete with an all-black musical choreographed by Lauren Curry ’07.
As
George C. Wolfe himself put it, "Black American culture
is a very fragmented thing. We're all trying to come up with some
definition of what we are. My absolute definition of me is the
schizophrenia, the contradiction ... 'I can't live inside yesterday's
pain,' says Topsy, 'but I can't live without it.' "
