Letter to the Mount Holyoke Community on the College's Relief
Efforts
September 13,
2005
Dear Mount Holyoke Community,
As you may
be aware, Mount Holyoke has taken swift action to ensure that
not only our own 12 students,
but all those affected by
Hurricane Katrina are provided for. Dean Bowie and the members
of CAUSE have acted quickly to begin a fundraising campaign
and have chosen the American Red Cross as our beneficiary. (Information
on how to donate and make checks payable.)
Since this disaster has such a long-term environmental, psychological,
and, perhaps most notably, fiscal impact, it is important that
our efforts are long-term as well. Beginning the week of September
11, CAUSE launched its fundraising campaign. We will place
buckets in all academic and administrative buildings where students,
faculty, and staff are all encouraged to donate. These buckets
will be regularly checked, and all money collected, counted, and
mailed to the American Red Cross by CAUSE members***.
CAUSE is
organizing a craft sale, with the help of the MHC Collaborates
and others, Wednesday, September 14, through Friday,
September 16. With the help of alumnae, we are also organizing
a bake sale for Wednesday, September 21, through Friday, September
23.
Additionally,
we have a white ribbon campaign for awareness. White stands
for hope and support, and we hope that you will
wear these
in support of those affected by this disaster as well as our
campaign. White ribbons will be available across campus.
In
the weeks to come, we hope to involve all interested organizations
in fundraisers for the American Red Cross. If you are interested
in becoming involved in fundraising efforts, please see the
email “Hurricane
fundraising collaboration for all organizations” and
visit www.mtholyoke.edu/org/cause.
Per
Dean Lee Bowie’s suggestion, CAUSE will be working
to keep all Mount Holyoke students, faculty, and staff
educated and informed about the impact of the hurricane.
More information
on these efforts is forthcoming.
Many of our
campaign efforts will be based in Blanchard Campus Center, including
our craft and bake
sales, so please be sure to
stop by. We
will keep you updated on new events via a bulletin board
in Blanchard
and our Web site.
We look forward
to working with all of you, and to your ideas, enthusiasm, and
support. Imagine what
a difference
we can
make if we all work together!
Thank you in
advance.
Sincerely,
The CAUSE Board
