Mount Holyoke's
Department of Theatre Arts, with support from the Center for
the Environment,
presents Mac Wellman’s A Murder
of Crows, directed by professor of theatre arts Roger Babb,
October 26–29 at 8 pm and October 29–30 at 2 pm in
the Rooke Theatre. A panel discussion on theatre and the environment
will
take place following the 2 pm performance on October 29.
A Murder
of Crows is an environmental tragic comedy that features a
young teenage heroine who is fervently involved with the weather.
She is surrounded by an unusual family that includes a brother
who has become a golden monument to the first Gulf war, an avaricious
aunt and uncle who secretly transport shopping bags full of money,
and a father who returns from a gruesome death of being buried
headfirst in a sludge pit. Throughout this fast-paced and very
funny piece, Wellman employs his signature verbal pyrotechnics.
Critic David Savran has written, “Wellman creates a language-driven
mis-en-scène that pulverizes the syntax of traditional
theatre.”
Tickets are
available at the theatre box office beginning October 24, from
3 to 6 pm, Monday through Friday,
and two hours prior
to performance. Phone reservations will be accepted prior to
October 24. For reservations, call 413-538-2406.
On Saturday
October 29, shortly after the matinee performance of A
Murder of Crows, there will be a panel discussion on the
theatre
and the environment with playwright Mac Wellman. The panel
will include theatre scholar Una Chaudhuri, ecologist Martha
Hoopes,
and panel cochairs Lauret Savoy, director of the Center for
the Environment, and Erika Rundle, dramaturge and assistant
professor
of theatre arts. Although free and open to the public, separate
reservations are required for the discussion at 413-538-2406.
