GOVERNOR CELLUCCI, MOUNT HOLYOKE PRESIDENT
TO CELEBRATE DISPLAY OF PORTRAIT OF MARY LYON

SOUTH HADLEY, Massachusetts—Governor Paul Cellucci will join together with President Joanne V. Creighton and leading alumnae of Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the hanging of a historic portrait of Mary Lyon in the governor's executive suite at the State House.

The portrait of the founder of the oldest women's institution of higher education has recently been loaned to the governor at his request in order to honor this Buckland native, born 203 years ago, who is commonly thought to be the progenitor of women's higher education in this country.

The 1844 portrait by South Hadley artist Joseph Goodhue Chandler will be on loan to the Governor from the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum for an undetermined period of time.

The event will take place at 4:30 on Wednesday, January 31, at the Governor's office at the State House.

Located in South Hadley, Mount Holyoke College is a highly selective liberal arts institution and a leading women's college. Lyon founded the school in 1837.
