EXPERT ON ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ARMS
PRODUCTION
TO SPEAK NOVEMBER 13 AT MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. Dr. Arjun Makhijani, a nuclear physicist
and leading international expert on the environmental impacts
of nuclear weapons production, will speak on Science, Stewardship,
and the Nuclear Waste Conundrum on Thursday, November 13
at 7 PM in Newcomb Cleveland Hall at Mount Holyoke College. His
talk, sponsored by the Military Waste Cleanup Program and the
Center for Environmental Literacy at MHC is free and open to the
public.
Makhijani is president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental
Research (http://www.ieer.org),
a Maryland think tank dedicated to increasing public involvement
in and control over environmental problems through the democratization
of science. He is author of several books, including Nuclear
Wastelands: A Global Guide to Nuclear Weapons Production and its
Health and Environmental Effects (MIT Press, 2000) and Manifesto
for Global Democracy: Two Essays on the Imperialist War System
& the Struggle for Freedom (Apex Press, 2003). Through
his work at IEER, Dr. Makhijani has assisted numerous communities
and the public at large in understanding the true costs of nuclear
waste and the need for balanced scientific analysis in a democratic
system.
The Military Waste Cleanup Program (http://www.milwaste.org)
supports communities and scientists in their efforts to understand
technical, environmental, and human health issues related to military
and nuclear environmental cleanup. MilWaste accomplishes its goals
through research, education, and outreach activities. The Program
is located at the Center for the Environment at Mt. Holyoke College,
a liberal arts college for women located in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
