EXPERT ON ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ARMS PRODUCTION TO SPEAK NOVEMBER 13 AT MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Dr. Arjun Makhijani, a nuclear physicist and leading international expert on the environmental impacts of nuclear weapons production, will speak on “Science, Stewardship, and the Nuclear Waste Conundrum” on Thursday, November 13 at 7 PM in Newcomb Cleveland Hall at Mount Holyoke College. His talk, sponsored by the Military Waste Cleanup Program and the Center for Environmental Literacy at MHC is free and open to the public.

Makhijani is president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (http://www.ieer.org), a Maryland think tank dedicated to increasing public involvement in and control over environmental problems through the democratization of science. He is author of several books, including Nuclear Wastelands: A Global Guide to Nuclear Weapons Production and its Health and Environmental Effects (MIT Press, 2000) and Manifesto for Global Democracy: Two Essays on the Imperialist War System & the Struggle for Freedom (Apex Press, 2003). Through his work at IEER, Dr. Makhijani has assisted numerous communities and the public at large in understanding the true costs of nuclear waste and the need for balanced scientific analysis in a democratic system.

The Military Waste Cleanup Program (http://www.milwaste.org) supports communities and scientists in their efforts to understand technical, environmental, and human health issues related to military and nuclear environmental cleanup. MilWaste accomplishes its goals through research, education, and outreach activities. The Program is located at the Center for the Environment at Mt. Holyoke College, a liberal arts college for women located in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
