MOUNT HOLYOKE PROFESSOR ROBERTO MARQUEZ INVITED TO WHITE HOUSE BRIEFINGS, SEPTEMBER 15 - 17

SOUTH HADLEY, Massachusetts—Roberto Marquez, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Mount Holyoke College, has been invited to attend a series of White House briefings concerning the Afro Latino Community. The series, which begins Wednesday, September 15, and ends Friday, September 17, is a general session hosted by the White House's Office of Public Liaison.

Attending the briefings, which Marquez learned would be dialogues, will be senior White House and administration officials representing a number of departments, including the White House's Race Initiative, The Small Business Administration, USAID, and the Vice President's Economic Development and Community Empowerment Office. The President is also expected to attend.

Administration officials will also use the occasion to highlight their achievements and accomplishments. Marquez—an editor, essayist, literary critic, and cultural historian—will attend briefings on civil rights; economic development and community empowerment; education, women, and children's issues; and international issues.

A member of the women's college's faculty since 1989, Marquez, a Puerto Rican born and raised in Spanish Harlem, is a distinguished scholar, recognized for the caliber of his many translations and his work in the field of Caribbean literary and cultural history. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities and is an associate editor of the New World Studies Series published by the University of Virginia Press.
