MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE FORUM
TO DISCUSS THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. Three highly acclaimed scholars: Ahmad
Dallal, professor of history at Stanford University; Gordon Levin,
professor of American studies at Amherst College; and Zachary
Lockman, professor of history at New York University, will take
part in "The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: What Is the Path
to Peace?," a forum that will be held Wednesday, April 3,
at 7 p.m. in Gamble Auditorium at Mount Holyoke College. The forum
will discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from different perspectives.
The event is free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible.
Dallal will present the Palestinian perspective on the causes
of the conflict and the necessary steps toward its resolution;
Levin will present the Israeli perspective on these issues; and
Lockman will discuss the role of the United States in helping
to resolve this conflict. Their presentations will be followed
by responses to each other, and then by a general discussion with
the audience. Mary Wilson, professor of history at the University
of Massachusetts, will serve as moderator.
Says Fred Moseley, professor of economics at MHC and member of
the ad hoc faculty committee that organized the forum, "If
you would like to learn more about this crucial conflict in the
world today and about possible ways to resolve this conflict,
and/or if have your own views on these important questions to
add to the discussion, we hope that you will attend this important
and timely discussion. It is hoped the forum will help to clarify
the first steps toward a path to peace, and what later, more conclusive,
steps might be."
The forum is jointly sponsored by Mount Holyoke and the Five
College's Peace and World Security Studies Program. Contributing
sponsors at MHC include the International Relations Program, the
economics department, the Purington Fund, the Office of the Dean
of the College, and the Weissman Center for Leadership.
