Live Cinema Returns to Mount Holyoke College
MHC Orchestra Presents the 1929 Silent Film
The Iron Mask
SOUTH
HADLEY, Mass.--The MHC Orchestra follows up last fall’s
successful presentation of Phantom of the Opera with another silent
film from 1929: The Iron Mask, starring Douglas Fairbanks. Music
by Carl Davis will be performed by the orchestra in synchronization
with the silent film under the direction of Mark Bartley, visiting
instructor in music. The Iron Mask is based on The
Man in the Iron Mask, by Alexandre Dumas, and features the
continuing adventures of the Three Musketeers as they try to thwart
the efforts of the
king of France’s evil twin brother to take over the throne.
"We
had such an overwhelming response to our first live cinema event, Phantom of the Opera,
that we felt we needed to follow it with
another big film," said Bartley. "Watching The Iron
Mask with live orchestral accompaniment is a rare treat, a
perfectly unique Halloween experience."

About the MHC Orchestra
Begun as a student organization in the spring of 2000 by Lisa Utzinger
'02 and Sara Curtin '02, the Mount Holyoke College Orchestra has
steadily gained popularity among the student body and surrounding
community. Now an official music department ensemble, the orchestra
has grown to a roster of over 50 players and maintains a busy concert
schedule, performing five or six major events each academic year.
Although a relatively young organization, the MHC Orchestra has
already collaborated with a long list of ensembles: Boston University
Choral Society; Boston University Men's Chorus; Cornell University
Hangovers; Euridice Quartet; New England Conservatory Children's
Chorus; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Symphony Orchestra; WPI
Men's Glee Club; Yale Camerata; MHC Concert Choir, Glee Club, Chamber
Singers and Family Chorus; Jazz Ensembles of MHC; and MHC English
Handbell Choir.
