His hit album Play, which debuted in June of 1999 and has reached gold or platinum in ten countries, brought Moby two Grammy nominations. Playfeatures field recordings of African American folk music and has received critical praise from a variety of top-tier publications. Of it, The Los Angeles Timeswrote, "Moby opens the door to 21st-century pop in this liberating work."

Moby is a direct descendant of Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick.He grew up in Connecticut and started classical guitar at 10. As a teenager, he was involved in rock, punk, and new wave bands. His first singles in the 1980s, such as Go, were staples of the rave scene, and it was through such early successes that he was viewed as a leader of the electronic music revolution. But, by 1995, with the release of Everything is Wrong,Moby's music had blossomed into a more eclectic style, as this work blended house, jungle, rock and thrash. Animal Rightsin 1996, The End of Everything, and I Like to Scorein 1997 all quickly followed, which solidified his reputation as a music maverick.
