FIFTH GRADERS OF HOLYOKE GET SLIMY AT MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE LABS JUNE 5-9
Students Investigate Cross-Linked Polymers by "Making Slime"
South Hadley, MAIn an effort to provide young students with pre-college enrichment opportunities, Ed Weaver, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Mount Holyoke; Edward Fitzgerald, Director of Laboratories at Mount Holyoke; Sandy Pallotta and Helen Gibson, PALMS specialists; and the fifth grade teachers of the Holyoke public school system have worked together to bring all the fifth grade students in the Holyoke schools to the Mount Holyoke campus from June 5 to June 9 to "make slime."
The science investigation is hosted by Mount Holyoke Colleges Chemistry Department and will involve about 500 students in the Holyoke school district. Each morning, Monday through Friday from 9:30 to noon, under the direction of the professors and teachers, the students will use laboratory equipment to investigate cross-linked polymers by making "slime."
150 students per day will participate in the event which is supported by Project PALMS. The experiments are part of the Mount Holyoke Chemistry Departments outreach program and will be held in Carr Laboratory in Rooms 105, 106 and 107.
