MOUNT HOLYOKE STUDENTS TO SPEND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
HONING THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS:
Second Annual Student Leadership Conference "From Vision to Action" Features Morning Workshops, Afternoon Programs, Lunch, and a Keynote Address
SOUTH HADLEY, MassachusettsFeaturing a variety of workshops led primarily by student leaders and campus administrators, the second annual student leadership conference at Mount Holyoke will tackle new and old leadership subjects on Saturday, September 23 from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM on the Colleges campus. Naomi Barry, a 1996 Mount Holyoke graduate, will give the events keynote address. College president Joanne V. Creighton will commence the daylong event with introductory remarks at 9:30 AM.
The conference will offer ten workshops, including several concerning the more difficult subjects confronting leaders, such as dealing with conflict and decision-making. Other topics to be covered during the six-hour event: time management, public presentations, publicity, and vision setting. The overall goal of the conference is to offer Mount Holyoke students a forum in which they can sharpen their ability to take action, work with others, and bring about positive change.
According to Karen Remmler, codirector for the Weissman Center for Leadership, one of the events sponsoring groups, "This years conference will focus on moving from vision to action. The workshops provide students with an excellent opportunity to develop not only their leadership skills, but also their ability to make a difference."
Sponsored by five campus groups, including the Harriet L. and Paul M. Weissman Center for Leadership, the conference is open to all Mount Holyoke students and student organizations. It includes lunch and is free. Following lunch, two sessions for student leaders and student organizations will focus on goal setting and coalition building.
Giving the conferences keynote address during lunch will be Naomi Barry, equal opportunity specialist with the U.S. Department of Labor. She will speak on "Leadership: From Vision to Action."
The Harriet L. and Paul M. Weissman Center for Leadership was established in 1999 to prepare students to engage in the public arena as critical thinkers in all realms of public life, intellectual exchange, and artistic expression.
