College¯s Skinner Hall, Room 216:
This academic year marks the fiftieth anniversary of WMHC,
the student-run radio station of Mount Holyoke College. In celebration
of this milestone, its members will present to the Mount Holyoke
College community a panel entitled "Making Waves: Women in Communication
Today," a tribute to WMHC¯s fifty years of women-run radio. This
panel is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 27th, 2002
at 10 a.m. in historic Skinner Hall on the Mount Holyoke College
campus, in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The panel will focus
on the evolving role of women in communication, referencing the
past and preparing for the future.
WMHC¯S goal for the panel is to present a forum for the presentation
and discussion of the importance of the role women play in the
media, in a question and answer format followed by an open question
session with the audience. Some questions planned for the panel
surround issues of women as participants and innovators in communications
industries and the challenges facing women in the media today,
Other emphasis include accounts of specific achievements by panel
members, reflections on the history and current situation of women
in communication, and insights into new strategies by women for
improvement of the media and communications industry.
The panel is scheduled to feature Alumnae Panelists:
Beth Karas ¯79, Reporter at "Court TV," Jill Gould ¯91, Supervising
Producer at "The People¯s Court," Mia Howard ¯99, in Marketing,
and Lydia Szarlan ¯92, On-Air Talent at WMAS-FM Springfield. This
