Labor and class issues on film

-In Workers Leaving the Factory (one of the world's first films, 1895) the Lumiere Brothers simply filmed employees going home (no political content here, but some of the first people ever captured on film were ordinary workers, not movie stars.)

- Song of the Shirt (1908 DW Griffiths)- melodrama about heartless factory bosses exploiting workers

-Metropolis (1927 Fritz Lang)-future dystopia in which the world is divided into thinkers who do no work and workers who aren't asked to think.

-Our Daily Bread (King Vidor 1934)- city dwellers flee the Depression and create a workers' utopia

-Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin 1936) anti-industrial comedy classic

-My Man Godfrey (Gregory La Cava 1936)-class conflict comedy: a socialite hires a vagrant as her family butler.

-On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan 1954)- longshoremen stand up to corrupt bosses.

-Harlan County, USA (1976 Barbara Koppel)- documentary about working-class/union life during a strike in the coalfields of Kentucky

-Norma Rae (Martin Ritt 1979)- young single mom gains courage and self respect as she helps organize the textile mill where she works.

Breaking Away (Peter Yates 1979)- an aspiring bicycle racer's working class roots set him apart in a university town

-Coal Miner's Daughter (Michael Apted 1980)-Biopic of singer Loretta Lynn, who grew up poor in an Appalachian “holler,” married at 13 and had four kids by age 20.

-Silkwood (Mike Nichols 1983)-working class heroine battles corporate lies at a plutonium processing plant

-Twice in a Lifetime (Bud Yorkin 1985)-realistic view of middle-aged steelworker's life

-Matewan (John Sayles 1987)-story of a strike and its effects on workers in a West Virginia mining town

-Good Will Hunting (Gus Van Sant 1997)-working class Boston kids, including Matt Damon as an MIT janitor with a gift for mathematics

-Roger & Me (Michael Moore 1989) Michael Moore, representing the citizens of post-industrial Flint, Michigan, takes on corporate America

-Metropolitan (Whit Stillman 1990)-upper class NYC types are joined by an “outsider” who doesn't share their background or their ideals.

-Six Degrees of Separation (Fred Schepisi 1993) rich NYC art dealers are taken in by an imposter claiming to know their son

-Erin Brockovich (Steven Soderbergh 2000)-unemployed single mom becomes a legal assistant and battles both class-based discrimination and corporate pollution that may be killing a community.

-Gosford Park (Robert Altman 2001)- “Upstairs /downstairs” look at the guests at a British estate and those who serve them… a drama/mystery

-The Good Girl- (Miguel Arteta 2002) Jennifer Aniston plays a clerk at a discount store who wants more out of life.

-North Country (Niki Caro 2004)-fictionalized account of the first woman to win a major sexual harassment suit; the male miners don't like women doing “men's work” and let the women know it.
