Make a Gift to MHC Directly From Your IRA! The IRA Charitable Rollover offers charitably minded individuals a golden opportunity to make tax-free gifts from their IRAs or Roth IRAs to Mount Holyoke and other qualified charities.
- The donor must be 70 ½ years of age or older on the date of the gift.
- Rollover gifts count toward mandatory withdrawal.
- The transfer of this outright gift must go directly from the IRA to the College.
- Maximum gift per taxpayer in any one year is $100,000.
- Gifts may not be directed to donor advised funds, support organizations, or to establish life income gifts.
Individuals who should consider making an IRA transfer may have one or more of the following:
- Hold major assets in their IRAs and wish to make a charitable gift during their lifetime;
- Do not need their minimum required distribution income from their IRA;
- Choose not to itemize deductions and want to exclude IRA withdrawals as reportable income;
- Live in states which do not allow charitable deductions;
- Usually give up to 50% of their adjusted gross income;
- Individuals who are subject to the 2% charitable deduction rule.
This opportunity is available through December 31, 2009. The IRS excludes the amount of your gift from your gross income for federal tax purposes, and therefore, no charitable deduction is necessary. Please contact your advisor or retirement plan administrator to initiate the transfer or mail us a transfer form.
NOTE - If you itemize your deductions, you can still make a charitable transfer gift—you just do not list the transfer on the deduction schedule.
