Office of Diversity and Inclusion

"No conversation without transformation."--- Gladys G. Moore

In July of 2007 Gladys Moore joined the Mount Holyoke community as the new Director of Diversity and Inclusion. In this position, Moore is overseeing the efforts to build and maintain a campus environment that is inclusive, pluralistic, and free of discrimination.

The creation of the Director of Diversity and Inclusion position was mandated by the Presidential Commission on Diverse Community Report, released to the campus in September 2005. Mount Holyoke views the DCC Report as a dynamic blueprint for the short-term and long-term work that will lead to systemic change. The report called for a Director who works with students, staff and faculty to develop plans and implement goals to help build a more diverse community and enhance the value of that community for each of its members. Working with others, the Director helps to plan and implement programs and workshops that promote the understanding of social justice and the impact of power and privilege on the individual, the group and the community at large. The Director of Diversity and Inclusion oversees the Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs and co-chairs the Multicultural Community and College Life Committee (MCCL). The College aims to be proactive rather than reactive in our mission to create a diverse learning and working community that is inclusive and free from discrimination.
