Director of the Language Resource Center
Mount Holyoke College seeks a director of its Language Resource Center with the aim of re-imagining the LRC as a space that fosters innovation and collaboration in the teaching and learning of languages and culture throughout the campus. The position offers an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in re-designing the existing lab and updating equipment with an aim to creating flexible space(s) for teaching and training.
The new director will:
- seek out, test, and implement multi-media materials for the teaching of language and culture.
- meet with faculty about needs; organize presentations on innovative uses of technology in the teaching of languages and culture; arrange for outside speakers on language/culture pedagogy and technology, etc.; work with similar Five College groups to share problems, solutions, innovations.
- train faculty and promote faculty development in technologies related to teaching and research in languages and culture.
- train, organize, and direct student workers.
- collaborate on grant writing in support of language pedagogy.
- assess on-going needs for the language building and its classroom/labs (hardware, software, materials, etc); provide some on-site assistance; coordinate technological acquisitions and support with the RIS group.
The director may also have the opportunity to teach a language course piloting new technologies.
The LRC director will report to the Dean of Faculty and will work in close cooperation with the Foreign Languages Executive Committee (the chairs of language departments and programs) and the director of Research and Instructional Services (RIS, a division of Library, Information, and Technology Services).
The successful candidate must have an M.A. or Ph.D. in a language, SLA, or related fields, native or near-native fluency in a language other than English, and at least two years experience or training in instructional technology. Strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills; excellence in classroom teaching; and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and professional staff colleagues is essential. Nine-month staff appointment; 2 year term, indefinitely renewable pending favorable reviews. Salary competitive.
