Stalking Awareness

What is Stalking?

Stalking is any repeated, unwanted contact that communicates a direct or indirect threat and that causes the victim to fear for her/his safety and/or the safety of friends or family members. Stalking affects people of all identities, and can occur within any community.

Unwanted contact can include:

- Following or surveillance - Unwanted or threatening gifts
- Inappropriate approaches and confrontations - Damage to property
- Appearing at a place of work or residence - Unwanted phone calls or letters
- Physical assault - Cyberstalking – unwanted e-mail or Instant Messages

- Sexual Assault

I Have Experienced Some of These; What Should I Do?

You don't have to go it alone. If someone exhibits behavior as described above (even one type of listed contact can be disturbing), contact Public Safety by dialing x2304 or for emergencies from a campus phone dial 1-911. If you are off-campus, dial 911 to reach the local police department.

Keep a record of any written messages, recorded messages and any unwanted contact and show this to Public Safety or your local department.

If the behavior you are seeing is not listed above, but is of concern to you, call Public Safety or your local police department if off campus. Officers are trained to assist you with taking measures to make you feel safer, and can connect you with important safety resources in the community.
