Logs March 2008
- Below is
a listing of all incidents and accidents reported to the Mount
Holyoke College Department of Public Safety. Each listing includes
the date and time of the report, a description of the incident
or accident which includes the location of the event, and a case
number and case status. These are provided for the education of
the community, as well as to satisfy the requirements of the Federal
Right to Know law. Please feel free to call Public Safety at x2304

occurring on campus.

- NOTE:
This log reflects only incidents reported to Public Safety that
occurred on the Mount Holyoke College campus. Incidents involving
our students off campus are reflected in the logs of the investigating
department.
March
23 and March 29:
On March 29
at 11:43pm officers and the EMTs responded to Pearsons Hall for
a report of an intoxicated student. She was assessed and was transported
to the hospital by ambulance (Incident #08-138-OF).
On March 28
at 9:30pm officers responded to Brigham Hall for a marijuana complaint.
Officers identified what was likely the source (Incident #08-137-OF).
Case Referred to Deans.
On March 28
at 2:04pm officers received a complaint about a male guest who has
been on campus. Public Safety is working with the Deans to investigate
and to work toward a resolution (Incident #08-136-OF). Case Open.
On March 27
at 10:52pm officers received a complaint about a "ball of fire"
rolling through the Dickinson parking lot. When they arrived, they
found students playing a game that involved lighting a tennis ball
on fire with lighter fluid and bouncing it to each other. Residential
Life staff were also on scene, and the lighter fluid was confiscated
(Incident #08-135-OF). Referred to the Deans.
On March 27
at 1:38pm officers responded to Shattuck Hall to assist a student
who was not feeling well. She was transported to the Health Center
(Incident #08-134-OF).

On March 26
at 12:11pm officers responded to Prospect Hall for a report of a
student who was choking and having a seizure. She was transported
to the hospital by ambulance (Incident #08-132-OF).
On
March 25 at 12:00pm officers were asked to do a well-being check
on a student. She was located and was transported to the Health
Center (Incident #08-133-OF).
On March 24
at 4:22pm a student reported that someone had stolen her friend's
laptop, iPod, and wallet from her car while it was parked in the
Ham/MacGregor parking lot between 3:00pm and 4:00pm. There was no
sign of forced entry on the vehicle (Incident #08-131-OF). Case
Open.
On March 24
at 3:13am officers received a report of a raccoon behaving strangely.
Officers requested the town's animal control officer who believed
the animal was ill, and removed it from the area (Incident #08-130-OF).
On March 23
at 9:24pm officers were asked to do a well-being check on a student
in North Mandelle Hall. The student was located and it was determined
she was OK. The reporting party was advised (Incident #08-129-OF).

15 and March 22:
On March 20
at 10:35am a student in Prospect Hall reported that someone knocked
on her room door and said something, then opened the door. When
the man saw her, he apologized and left. Officers are investigating
whether or not the person may have been doing work in the building
(Incident #08-128-OF). Case Open.
On March 18
at 10:47am officers responded to Blanchard Hall for a fire alarm.
The alarm is believed to have been caused by steam cleaning of trash
barrels (Incident #08-127-OF).

9 and March 15:
On March 15
at 7:54am an employee reported finding a window pushed in on the
west door of the Ciruti Center. The building was checked, and nothing
appeared to be out of place or missing. It is unclear if the pane
was pushed in accidentally or purposely (Incident #08-126-OF). Case
Open.
On March 15
at 5:53am officers responded to 1837 Hall for a report of a disturbance.
Officers checked the hall, and found two people involved in a verbal
disagreement outside the hall. Both parties were interviewed, and
it is clear there was not physical assault involved. They were asked
to reduce the volume so as not to disturb residents in the hall
(Incident #08-125-OF). Case Closed.
On March 14
at 6:31pm officers received information that someone had posted
on an off-campus chat board that they had attempted to commit suicide.
Officers worked with the Mount Holyoke LITS networking staff and
the manager of the site to attempt to determine who posted the notice
to attempt to assist that person, but due to the anonymity of the
site, no information could be obtained (Incident #08-124-OF). Case
Open.
On March 14
at 11:42am officers responded to the ACE House for a report of apparent
fire damage found when a painting request was submitted to Facilities
Management. Officers are trying to contact students affiliated with
the house to determine the cause and timing of what appears to have
been a fire on the stove (Incident #08-123-OF). Case Open.
On March 13
at 9:13am a student reported receiving an email from an unknown
person. The message was not threatening (Incident #08-122-OF). Case
Open.
On March 13
at 8:15am officers were asked to do a well-being check on a student.
She was located and was transported to the Health Center (Incident
#08-121-OF).
On March 12
at 11:28pm officers responded to Shattuck Hall to assist an employee
who was having an allergic reaction. She was evaluated and will
seek treatment off campus (Incident 08-120-OF).

On March 12
at 4:37pm a student reported her digital camera was stolen on February
17 around 11:30pm from Chapin Hall (Incident 08-117-OF). Case Open.
On March 12
at 3:37pm a student reported she was sexually assaulted in her residence
hall room at around 2:30am on September 28. She did not know the
assailant, described as an overweight, light-skinned male with a
dark goatee. He may have entered her room via an unlocked door (Incident
#08-116-OF). Case Open.
On March 11
at 12:05pm officers responded to the Equestrian Center to assist
a student who had fallen from a horse. She was transported to the
hospital by ambulance (Incident #08-115-OF).
Case Update
for Incident #08-100-OF: Officers on patrol found the bicycle originally
reported stolen on March 7 from Mead Hall was located outside Brigham
Hall and was returned to its owner. Case Closed.
On March 10
at 8:23pm a student reported that her cell phone was stolen on March
9 around 10:00am from a table at South Rockefeller Hall (Incident
#08-114-OF). Case Open.
On March 10
at 3:01pm damage was reported to a college vehicle (Incident #08-113-OF).
Case Open.
On March 10
at 5:44pm a student reported her cell phone was stolen from outside
the weight room at Kendall Hall between 5:10pm and 5:40pm (Incident
#08-112-OF). Case Open.
On March 10
at 4:56pm a student in South Rockefeller Hall reported the theft
of prescription medication by a fellow student. The responsible
person admitted to this, and was referred to the Deans (Incident
#08-111-OF). Case Referred to the Deans.

On March 10
at 10:00am officers responded to the Library to assist an employee
who was not feeling well. He was transported to the hospital by
ambulance (Incident #08-109-OF).
On March 9 at
9:13pm a student in Buckland Hall reported cash was stolen from
her room both on March 9 as well as on February 29, which was previously
unreported. The room was unlocked on both occasions (Incident #08-108-OF).
Case Open.
On March 9 at
9:13pm a student in Abbey Hall reported that someone stole money
from her wallet between 6:30pm and 8:00pm. She reported the room
was unlocked at the time, and that other students in the hall had
money stolen similarly in the past month (Incident #08-107-OF).

On March 9 at
4:33am officers responded to North Mandelle Hall for a report of
an intoxicated student. She was evaluated and was transported to
the hospital by ambulance (Incident #08-106-OF).
March
2 and March 8:
On March 8 at
7:05pm a student reported that her jacket, which had an iPod and
other belongings in the pockets, was stolen from the locker room
at Kendall Hall (Incident #08-105-OF).
On March 8 at
3:01am officers and South Hadley Police Department were called to
the area of Mary Lyon Hall by a group of four males who reported
they had been jumped from behind by another group of males near
Brigham Hall. They reported they had been thrown to the ground and
assaulted, then the perpetrators ran toward the Mary Lyon parking
lot. One male reported that his wallet had been stolen. It was found
nearby without the cash that had been inside. Two of the victims
had injuries, but refused further medical treatment. The description
of one of the males is similar to the description of one of the
males involved in the assault below: he is described as a tall,
African-American male wearing a white hooded sweatshirt (Incident
#08-104-OF).
On March 8 at
3:26am officers responded to South Rockefeller Hall to assist a
student who was intoxicated. She was evaluated and was transported
to the hospital by ambulance (Incident #08-103-OF).
On March 8 at
1:39am officers at an event were called to assist a male guest who
had been assaulted by a group of males at the event at Blanchard
Hall. The male was assessed and was transported by the hospital
by ambulance. One possible suspect was identified by witness descriptions,
but he denied involvement in the incident (Incident #08-102-OF).

On March 7 at
10:52pm officers received a complaint of an odor of marijuana outside
a room in Abbey Hall. Officers could detect a faint odor of marijuana
inside the room, though the resident denied using the substance
(Incident #08-101-OF). Case Referred to the Deans.
On
March 7 at 4:26pm a student reported that her bicycle was stolen
from Mead Hall during January Term. The bicycle was not secured
when it was last seen (Incident #08-100-OF). Case Closed - bicycle
found and returned on March 11.
On March 5 at
8:15pm a student reported being shocked by a vacuum cleaner she
had been using in North Mandelle Hall. She was assessed by officers
and the EMTs, and was transported to the hospital by ambulance (Incident
#08-99-OF).
On
March 5 at 1:09pm an officer on patrol noticed a pillar at 1837
Hall was spray painted. Facilities Management staff were notified
to clean up the pillar (Incident #08-110-OF).
On March 5 at
9:08am an employee reported that the hood of her car was damaged
while parked in front of Buckland Hall on the afternoon of March
4. It appeared that something had been dropped on the hood (Incident
#08-98-OF). Case Open.
Incident #08-97-OF:
Incident Not Assigned.
On March 5 at
1:22am officers found a vehicle on campus whose plates had been
reported stolen. The owner was contacted and reported that the plates
had been reported stolen on March 1 but were recovered on March
3 but records at the Registry of Motor Vehicles had not been updated
(Incident #08-96-OF). Case Open.

On March 4 at
7:56pm an employee reported finding damage to a college vehicle
(Incident #08-94-OF). Case Open.
On March 4 at
2:35pm officers received a report that a vehicle had just been broken
into in the Gorse parking lot. A witness reported that a white male
in his late teens to early 20's in a white van with no windows had
meandered through the lot and stopped at a car and smashed its window.
The driver of the car reported nothing was stolen, but many items
were moved around the car. South Hadley Police Department reported
a similar break had occurred off campus, and officers are working
with that department to investigate this incident. Several items
were removed in order to obtain fingerprints (Incident #08-93-OF).

On March 3 at
6:31pm officers received reports of an odor of natural gas around
Clapp Hall and outside the Heating Plant. The source was quickly
identified as a pipe outside the Central Services Complex. The Fire
Department and gas company were notified. Central Services and the
Ciruti Center were evacuated. By around 8:00pm the pipe was repaired
and the buildings involved were determined to be safe to re-occupy
(Incident #08-92-OF).
On March 2 at
2:44pm officers responded to the Equestrian Center to assist a visitor
who had fallen from a horse. An EMT already on scene was assessing
the woman, who was transported to the hospital by ambulance (Incident
#08-91-OF).
On March 2 at
1:49am a student reported receiving annoying telephone calls on
her cell phone (Incident #08-90-OF). Case Open.
