Identity Theft - A Resource Guide for Victims

If you have become the victim of identity theft, it is important to act quickly to reduce the damage done to your finances, credit, and to your reputation.

1. Close compromised credit or bank accounts immediately. Ask the institution if there was any unauthorized activity on the account, and if so, ask for details (where, when, amount, etc.) This may be valuable to the investigation of the crime.

2. Notify the nearest law enforcement department. On campus, notify the Department of Public Safety at x2304.

3. If your social security card or number appears to be compromised, alert the Social Security Administration at http://www.ssa.gov/ or 800-269-0271.

4. Replace items like identification cards and drivers licenses right away.

5. Contact one of the three credit reporting bureaus to put a fraud alert on your credit report:

Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

Experian: 1-888-EXPERIAN (397-3742); www.experian.com; P.O. Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013

TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division, P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

6. If your checks were stolen, or bank accounts were set up by an identity thief contact the major check verification companies:

a. CheckRite -- (800) 766-2748
b. ChexSystems -- (800) 428-9623 (closed checking accounts)
c. CrossCheck -- (800) 552-1900
d. Equifax -- (800) 437-5120
e. National Processing Co. (NPC) -- (800) 526-5380
f. SCAN -- (800) 262-7771
g. TeleCheck -- (800) 710-9898

7. Contact the Internal Revenue Service if you suspect the improper use of identification information in connection with tax violations (call 1-800-829-0433 to report the violations).
