Massachusetts Higher
Education Consortium

In 1976, the Massachusetts Higher Education Consortium, better
know as the MHEC, was formed for the benefit of public higher education
in the Commonwealth. Membership was also granted to select private
colleges who were affiliated with public institutions through academic
consortial relationships. Its first contracts were put in place
on July 1, 1977. In 1998, after fourteen years of legislative process,
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts passed Section 24A, amending M.G.L.
Chapter 15A extending the benefits of the MHEC to all institutions
of higher education in the Commonwealth. The MHEC membership now
includes 83 institutions in the Commonwealth. For a listing of members,
click "members" on the MHEC home page.
Mount Holyoke College joined the MHEC in 1988. Mount Holyoke College
has saved significantly because of the MHEC buying power. As we
move to a more decentralized purchasing format, it is important
that we still actively use the MHEC contracts. The MHEC staff has
already done a good deal of negotiating on the behalf of Mount Holyoke
College. Please try to remember to check an approved MHEC vendor
for the best possible price.
