Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually transmitted infections (STI) is a broad term that refers to more than 50 diseases and syndromes which may be transmitted by vaginal secretion, semen, blood, breast milk and saliva. STI’s can be serious and painful and may have long term health consequences; however, when diagnosed early the majority of STI’s can be cured or treated to alleviate symptoms. STI’s affect women and men of all backgrounds and economic levels. It is estimated that by age 24, 1 in 3 sexually active people will have contracted a STI. The most common STI’s on college campuses include chlamydia, trichomoniasis, genital herpes and HPV. Young adults are at a higher risk for acquiring STI’s for a number of reasons- may be more likely to engage in unprotected sexual activity and they may be involved with partners at high risk. That’s why we advocate practicing safer sex. Use barrier methods like male and female condoms or latex gloves so that you and your partners minimize the risk of acquiring STI’s during sexual activity.
