Facts about MHC
One of the nation's finest liberal arts institutions,
Mount Holyoke College is a highly selective, nondenominational,
residential, liberal
arts college for women located in South Hadley, in the Connecticut
River valley in western Massachusettsone of the most culturally
and academically vibrant regions of the country.
Founded in 1837 by chemist and revolutionary educator Mary Lyon,
Mount Holyoke is the nation's oldest continuing institution of
higher
learning for women. It was the first of the Seven Sistersthe
female equivalent of the formerly all-male Ivy League.
Today, Mount Holyoke is recognized worldwide for its rigorous
