Tufts
Liberty Plan

Health Insurance Changes
Along with gas prices, heating oil and other expenses, health insurance
premiums continue to increase every year. This past spring, a
cross-departmental committee conducted a comprehensive review
of the health insurance plans offered to MHC employees. As a
result
of that work, the College now offers its employees a range of
products from Blue Cross / Blue Shield and Tufts Health Plan.
Among the choices are two HMO plans, a Point of Service (POS) plan,
and two Consumer
Driven Health Plans (CDHP). While the HMO products
continue to be the most popular plans, approximately 45 employees
have elected to enroll in the Tufts Liberty plans (CDHP).
Consumer-Driven health plans offer lower premiums coupled with
a “Personal Medical Fund” (PMF). The College contributes
to the PMF as part of its contribution to each subscriber's health
care. Employees also have the option of contributing to their own
PMF.
The principle goal of this type of insurance plan is to provide
incentives to consumers for becoming more involved in the financial
aspects of their own health care and for making healthy lifestyle
choices. The incentives include retaining some or all of the unused
contributions made to the personal medical fund and discounts and
other rewards for participating in Tufts' wellness program (Vitality).
Changes to health insurance plans can be made throughout the month
of May, during the “Open Enrollment” period. Any changes
initiated in May will take effect on July 1.
