- Photographs
- The photograph
collection consists of over 100,000 images dating from the early
1840's to the present. The collection includes examples of many
photographic processes including, daguerreotypes, cyanotypes,
and tintypes. The collection documents the development of Mount
Holyoke College from the time of the introduction of photography
in this country to the present. Images in the collection include
the buildings, people and activities of the College and to a lesser
extent the surrounding town of South Hadley Massachusetts and
other local places of interest. The photographs also document
the lives of many of the individuals represented in our Manuscript Collections. At this time there is limited
cross collection subject access to the photographs.
Post
Cards
- The post
card collection consists of more than 400 cards primarily showing
views of the College campus between the 1890's and the present.
The collection also includes scenes of the town of South Hadley,
and other local sites including both the Summit House on Mount
Holyoke (the mountain) and the summit of Mount Tom.
- Prints
and Drawings
- The prints
and drawings collections contain a wide variety of materials including
fine press broadsides, a large collection of prints and drawings
of people and buildings of Mount Holyoke College, and some images
of sites in the surrounding area such as Mount Holyoke (the mountain)
and Mount Tom. Included in this collection are examples of many
types of printing processes and drawing techniques including woodcuts,
etchings, intaglios, caracole drawings and silhouettes.
- Maps
- The map collection
contains numerous examples of maps and atlases dating from the
early eighteenth Century to the twentieth. Included in the collection
are maps by both professional map makers and amateurs. The maps
and atlases cover ancient, European and American subjects. Also
included are maps created by early New England educators such
as Mary Lyon and Zilpah Grant Banister and some maps used as teaching
tools at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. In addition, the collection
contains maps of the grounds of Mount Holyoke College and the
town of South Hadley, Massachusetts.
