Historical Sketch:
Louise F. Cowles was born in 1842, in Norfalk, Connecticut, and graduated from Mount Holyoke in 1866. She taught at the Seminary (later the College) from 1867-1904, and was Acting President in 1889, following the death of President-elect Brigham. Cowles died in 1924.

Description of Records:
The records of Louise F. Cowles include both personal and professional information consisting of correspondence dating from 1898-1912; biographical materials (1882- ) including journal excerpts of students; and profiles, obituaries, memorials and news clippings. The documents provide information on Cowles' life as a teacher at the Seminary, her activities as Acting President, her travels and career accomplishments.
