Dean of International Affairs , Records 1980-

Historical Sketch: In order to more effectively meet the needs of international students, an Associate Dean of Studies was chosen as the first Foreign Student Advisor in 1969. It was an appointed position, filled by a member of the College faculty, which functioned under the Office of the Dean of Studies. The position name changed to Dean of International Students in 1981 and in 1990 the name was changed to Dean of International Affairs. In 1996 the Dean of International Affairs reported directly to the Dean of the College, since the Dean of Studies position had been eliminated. The Dean of International Affairs is responsible for all matters relating to international students, including first years' orientation, assistance with tax forms, and answering all foreign student questions or concerns. In addition, the Dean of International Affairs also coordinates the Study Abroad program. The position of Foreign Student Advisor was held by Adaline Pates Potter (1969-1974/75) and by Charles Henry Olmsted (1975/76-1979/80). The position of Dean of International Students was held by Mary Josephine Jacob (1980/81-1995/96). During her tenure, the title changed to Dean of International Affairs. Donna Van Handle served as Interim Dean of International Affairs during the academic year 1996/97. Christopher Rivers (1997/98- ) was then appointed Dean of International Affairs.

Description of Records: The records of the Dean of International Affairs contain correspondence with foreign alumnae, committee minutes and reports, office files, and student records which provide information about office activities involving the concerns of international students at the College. The documents also include material relating to the International Conference on the Worldwide Education of Women held at the College on Founder's Day, 1987. This material consists of correspondence, papers, memos, reports, news articles, pamphlets, and audio and videocassettes of the proceedings and document the individuals and organizations contacted, the papers read, and the preparations and regional trips made in connection with the Conference.
