Sponsored Research Manual
INTRODUCTION
This manual discusses the primary responsibilities of the Principal Investigator
(PI) and various offices of the College, including the Office of Sponsored Research,
the Office of Development, and the Office of Financial Services in the preparation
of proposals and the administration of external grants awarded to the College
for the conduct of research or curriculum development. It also explains the
procedures that govern the administration of grants by the College and the PIs,
including the administration of the funding agencies' guidelines and policies,
as well as particular terms and conditions of a grant, the employment of staff,
the expenditure of grant funds, and the conduct of activities supported by the
grant. While references to specific policies and procedures in this document
are current at the time of publication, it is the PI's responsibility to be
aware of, and ensure adherence to any future relevant policies and procedures.
Grants are typically awarded to Mount Holyoke College, not to the PI. Federal,
state and private agencies require that College procedures and internal controls
will be adhered to during the term of the grant. When submitting the proposal,
the College is certifying as to the presence of such procedures and controls,
and the PI is required to abide by them if the grant is awarded.
Much of this manual is oriented toward grants awarded to individual PIs. The
Office of Sponsored Research typically works with PIs in submitting proposals
for such grants to federal, state or local government agencies, and in some
instances to private foundations. The Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR)
division of the Office of Development is responsible for securing institutional
grants from private foundations or other sources. These types of grants are
awarded to the College, rather than to individual faculty members, and typically
fund college-wide initiatives, such as the Weissman Center for Leadership or
the new science center. Institutional grants are often administered by a department
or a collaboration among departments. The CFR office will assist faculty involved
with an institutional grant with the narrative and financial reporting.
