Steps to Submit an External Grant

  1. Identify a good project (i.e., intellectually-based, hypothesis-driven, etc.).

  2. Identify the appropriate funding source/program (by reading the program descriptions). You may use the Community of Science or Grant Advisor databases from a Mount Holyoke computer.

  3. Email the Office of Sponsored Research as soon as possible, especially where college matching, cost-sharing, or in-kind contribution is involved.

  4. Write a proposal according to the guidelines spelled out in the program announcement, keeping in mind these basic tip (PDF).

  5. Construct a budget and get approval by Grant Accountant Linda Niemczura of Financial Services. You may wish to use this Financial Services Budget Worksheet (XLS).

You will get an official Grant and Contract Proposal Signoff Sheet (PDF) from her that is needed to complete the rest of the approval process.

  6. Give the entire proposal to the Office of Sponsored Research for signature on the Proposal Signoff Sheet, which will then submit for signature to the Dean of Faculty. Please allow at least a day for this step.

  7. Submit the proposal. Consult with the Office Of Sponsored Research as to whether online or paper submission is required.

  8. In general, it takes about 9 months to a year to hear the outcome of your application.
